EyeSustain: ZEISS Feature
As part of ZEISS Group, ZEISS Medical Technology has developed a sustainability strategy in accordance with its strategic business objectives. ZEISS Medical Technology optimizes its business processes in line with environmental and economic aspects and aims to organize them so that fewer resources are required. ZEISS Medical Technology has therefore implemented environmental, energy, and health and safety management systems to help prevent working injuries, preserving employees’ health, minimizing the waste generation, increasing energy efficiency, and containing emissions as far as possible.
Consequently, ZEISS Medical Technology implements a variety of sustainability measures across its sites for reducing the company’s impact on the environment and climate. Some of these ongoing sustainability practices include the following:
- Setting up a global energy data platform by the ZEISS Group and serving the needs of ZEISS Medical Technology to collect the data of all sites worldwide with significant energy consumption.
- At the four main production sites, utilizing renewable energy to cover the electricity use, about half of the overall energy consumption, by means of Power Purchase Agreements, green tariffs, and energy attribute certificates.
- Initiating processes for reduction of waste via packaging design optimization and recycling for selected items of the cataract surgery.
- Reduction of transport packaging waste by consolidating orders and shipments at pilot customers in Germany and France. So far, the positive impact has been avoiding about one ton of packaging waste and more than one ton of CO2 emissions.
- Continuous monitoring of workplace injuries and providing trainings to help prevent them.
- Incentivizing the use of shared means of transportation and alternative mobility at the main production sites in Europe.
