Association between air pollution exposure and diabetic retinopathy among diabetics
In patients with diabetes mellitus, exposure to particulate matter is linked to diabetic retinopathy (DR) risk, according with a study from Taiwan. This retrospective, population-based, nested case-control study used the country's National Health Insurance database that covers 99% of its population. Researchers discovered an odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of diabetic retinopathy occurrence for every 10-μg/m3 increase in particulate matter with ≤2.5 and 2.5–10-μm diameter was 1.29 (1.11–1.50) and 1.37 (1.17–1.61), respectively.
